Redheaded lady friend of mine was staring at the sky
The night was clear, the moon was shining mighty full and high
But that beam was not the only thing on that balcony in town
She took a spill and woke up in a hospital gown

Doc came in and patched her up and said, "You're free to go,
But if you know what's good for you, stay safe and you'll stay low."
She said, "Well doc, the life of caution ain't the life for me.
I'll hold on tight at greater heights, but there ain't no guarantee."

Later on that winter in the plains so bitter cold
A boy stood on a rooftop, he was shoveling the snow
He was brave, he was bold, but he was knocked right off his feet
Took a tumble, landed with his face right on the street

They took him by an ambulance hooked up to an I.V.
He said, "Lesson learned, I'm gonna turn this life around, you'll see."

Pops went to the Ozarks, to his cabin by the lake
Never thinking once his trip would lead him to a gory fate
He was climbing on a ladder but the seventh rung was bent
Let out a yell, the ladder fell, and with it Daddy went

Turns out his neck was broken; it broke hard but it broke clean
Doc came in and said it was the worst he'd ever seen
Times were grave, Momma prayed, and things were looking bleak
But my old man woke from surgery and he walked out the next week
